This page is NOT fully functional ~ it still needs some tweaking!
The Trees Database search scripting is now under development: this database will include all species of tree native to the British Isles, some exotic species and hybrids.
The database only includes trees that occur in the British Isles.
Searching for ‘Common’ will find all species of tree that have ‘Common’ as part of the name, eg Common Oak, Common Alder and so on. You can also use this page to find the common name of a tree if you already know its scientific name.
There are 48 species of tree native to the British Isles listed in the database. These species colonised this region at the end of the last ice-age when the ice sheet receded. Other species are listed as "introduced" if they were brought here subsequently, eg by the Romans or "naturalised" if they now occur naturally. Those species listed as "exotic" are found in parks and gardens where they have been planted. The database also includes hybrids. However it DOES NOT include the large number of "cultivars" so please do not waste time looking for them.
We have only listed trees that occur in the British Isles.
